The custom of “Kadis” in Spatharei - 2015

On Carnival in Samos, the village Spatharei, revive the custom of “Kadis”. This tradition has its roots in the Ottoman era and satirizes the Ottoman judges, who demanded that the Samians had to pay them unsustainable taxes. Nowadays, Kadis (the judge) enters the village square on a donkey, accompanied by soldiers. The court begins and the peasant who represents the Ottoman Kadi, judge the attendees finding silly excuses. The festival culminates in the evening, when more people gather and enjoy traditional music, dancing and plenty of wine.
